Disparaging Humor: When a Joke is Not Just a Joke & The History and Meaning of the "Confederate Flag"

  • NJHEART Flemington, NJ 08822 USA (map)

We’ve all heard racist or sexist jokes, usually followed by the claim that it's just a joke and that it doesn’t mean anything. Unfortunately, the research says otherwise. Disparaging humor does reflect our biases and can actually reinforce or nurture them. This session will discuss how to talk to students about disparaging humor. In addition, we will offer a brief history of the “Confederate flag” that can be passed along to students to teach them about what it has represented throughout our history.
